Mamelodi Sundowns prepare for a daunting task against Amakhosi

By Neo Poho

After continuing where they left off last season with a 2-1 victory against Sekhukhune United in the opening match of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season, Mamelodi Sundowns will welcome Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Ahead of the encounter Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that his side will have to be wary of a very rejuvenated and different Kaizer Chiefs side.

During Mamelodi Sundowns' press conference on Monday afternoon, Mokwena said Amakhosi have a new coach who needs time to work on his ideas and get players to adapt however, that doesn't mean they should ignore the threat the Glamour Boys poses.

"The starting point is that we have to respect every team, we respect our opponents and Kaizer Chiefs is no different, the rivalry between Sundowns and Chiefs makes this a big encounter and we have to rise to the occasion.

The two new centre-backs give them a little bit of stability in Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and Given Msimango and that shows a big improvement on their side, big respect to them because from a physical side they have enough to hurt you and it does seem to me that from a quality point of view, they have improved," Mokwena said.

Although Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Chiefs twice last season, history still favours the side from Naturena as the Molefi Ntseki's side have won 29 matches between the two sides compared to 26 for the Brazilians, while 21 games have ended in draws.

With the state of the Lucas Moripe Stadium also being a topic of discussion after the league previously banned the venue from hosting PSL matches, Mokwena is confident that the pitch will be in good condition for the match.

"Fortunately, I drove to Lucas Moripe last Sunday with staff members that work on the pitch and there's been some good work done even though I don’t think it will be the best pitch possible I still think it will be in good condition to host a good game," Mokwena added.

Kick-off at the Lucas Moripe Stadium is 15:00 o'clock.
