"Our defence let us down this season" - Arthur Zwane

Following another disappointing PSL season for Kaizer Chiefs, head coach Arthur Zwane reckons that Chiefs' defence let the team down during the just ended 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign.

Amakhosi lost their final game of the season 1-0 to Cape Town City over the past weekend at the FNB Stadium to extend their losing streak to four consecutive matches in all competitions.

The 1-0 loss to Cape Town City saw Chiefs conceed their 39th goal of the season across all competitions in the 2022/23 PSL season, the loss also meant that Amakhosi finished the league on the fifth spot with 44 points after 30 games.

Reflecting on another season without winning a trophy, Zwane has put the blame on the injuries faced by the club throughout the season and the inconsistency of the defence.

“Unfortunately when one looks at the goals that we conceded this season, you can see that the entire defence let us down hence we started to change Zitha Kwinika for Edmilson Dove at the centre-back, Dove is a left-back but because we wanted that balance of playing and someone who could help with the organisation, we opted for him," Zwane said.

With Kwinika re-joining the side from Naturena from Stellenbosch FC, Zwane revealed some of tactics the opponents used especially when Kwinika was playing at the centre-back position.

“At some point, we were one-dimensional from the back with Zitha because he is a right-footed player, so that gave our opponents a chance to channel us in one direction and trap us there and that is how we actually conceded some of the goals early in the season."

The 49 year-old furthermore alluded that once a certain challenge would be solved at the back, another one arose as they were still looking for a left centre-back but couldn’t get one at that time.

"Not getting the left centre-back that we wanted meant we needed to come up with a plan and move Dove to the left centre-back because he has the qualities as well to play as a centre-back, that gave us the option to play Sifiso Hlanti at left-back.

However, you could also see with the performance of Hlanti that the pressure was too much because of his age, Hlanti needed someone to help him sometimes and unfortunately we relied on him too much because of his experience, and at some point, we were badly exposed because of that," Zwane added.
