Paying Tribute to John Moeti

By Neo Poho

After the passing of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend John Moeti on Monday morning, the football fraternity has been sending in their deepest condolences to the Moeti family and also paying tribute to one who they describe was a leader of note.

The former Dynamos, SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates central midfielder was one of the best midfielders of his generation with good skill and having an eye for great passes too.

As part of paying tribute to Moeti, we spoke with former teammate at Orlando Pirates Tebogo Moloi who was very close to Moeti on and off the pitch, Moloi described Moeti as a rare breed and a player that will forever live in the history books of South African football.

A very saddened Moloi mentioned that the news around the passing of Moeti shocked him on Monday because he knew Moeti as a fighter and someone that was physically and mentally strong.

"I was very surprised when I heard the news that Moeti has passed on because I knew Moeti as someone that was always strong and very courageous, I am really sad and hurt that one of the best players to have ever graced the football field is no more," Moloi said.

Upon joining Orlando Pirates, Moeti actually joined the wrong Orlando Pirates that was in the NPSL however, Dr. Ivan Khoza then brought him to the NSL as he joined the correct Orlando Pirates side and the rest is history.

Moloi reflects on how he met Moeti and some of the conversations they shared together at the camp whether it was before the match or after.

"I met Moeti at Orlando Pirates and upon his arrival at the club, him and I just started to get along beautifully because he was such a humble soul that was easily accessible, very soft spoken and a true gentleman of note,

I remember some of the conversations we had together were around my style of play, Moeti believed in me so much that even when I was not part of the starting XI he would question the coach why am I starting on the bench,

He knew my strengths and he also knew how to get the best out of me in the field of play, I have learned a lot from Moeti, I learned how to lead because he was an exceptional leader, I learned how to cultivate a culture of winning because Moeti never went to the pitch for a loss or a draw, that is why we managed to clinch the 95' Champions League," Moloi added.

Moeti affectionately known as Dungi to many football fans and the whole fraternity at large was a very committed and disciplined player with dedication that was beyond the call of duty.

Moloi furthermore stated that Moeti's leadership qualities played an important role in making sure that Orlando Pirates won the 1995 CAF Champions League, "when we talk about dynamites come in small packages we refer to Dungi, his impact and contribution towards the Pirates 95' CAF success was emulated to the 1996 Bafana Bafana AFCON triumph," said Moloi.

Another legend of the game, Avril Phali has paid tribute to Moeti describing him as an epitome of success, Phali met with Moeti during his times at SuperSport United with the likes of the late Thomas Madigage also in the team.

The former Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper reflected on how Moeti and Madigage played a pivotal role in his football journey.

"Moeti and Madigage taught me discipline and humanity in football, I was always early for my training sessions because of Moeti, Dungi would always be early for anything, whether it is a team meeting or a training session or just a briefing he influenced me to always be punctual at all times,

"I honestly believe that within the current crop of players there is no one that will ever match the type of leadership qualities Moeti possessed, he is a rare breed and it is so unfortunate to lose him at such a time when South Africa football players need to be guided and taught correctly especially about discipline, Phali said.

Phali also reiterated that Moeti without a doubt has left a legacy for the young and upcoming generations to learn from and run with the baton in a bid to create their own legacy too.

One man that knows all about Moeti is former Dynamos FC owner Najeeb Camroodien who groomed Moeti from a very tender age to the man that he was now.

Camroodien described Moeti as a very reserved, friendly, honest and generous person as he spent of his time with Moeti at Dynamos FC along with the likes of Marks Maponyane.

"Dungi was a master in midfield, a pure work of class with a great vision and impeccable skill, I remember when Dynamos was playing everyone would come looking forward to seeing Moeti play and whenever he held the ball everyone would just get excited because with Moeti anything was possible,

"It is a sad moment for all of us especially the Dynamos former players because Moeti was one of the players that carried the Dynamos team, when we didn't get the desired result he would motivate the team and cheer the guys on as we prepared for the next match, a very level headed player Dungi was," said Camroodien.

Camroodien further reflected on how Moeti became a pharmacist, "My fondest memory of Moeti was how despite being a great footballer, he was also a very intelligent person, a man that knew that a football career is very short lived, so he decided to go to school and fortunately enough he graduated at Wits as a qualified pharmacist, I was very excited and happy for him because this shows the resilience he had as a human being," added Camroodien.

Details on the funeral and memorial service of the late John Moeti have yet to be released, the family, in its statement, made it clear that, at this time it is still processing the untimely death of the ex-footballer and more information on his burial and celebration of life will be communicated in due time.
