"Pirates need to rise to the occasion against Swallows" - Tebogo Moloi

By Neo Poho

Orlando Pirates legend Tebogo Moloi has argued that Pirates need to put the defeat against Kaizer Chiefs behind them even though it was a painful loss.

Pirates lost to Chiefs 1-0 in the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium when substitute Olisa Ndah scored an own goal at the death of the match to give Chiefs all the bragging rights in Soweto as they completed a league double over the Buccaneers.

"It is now water under the bridge, I know the loss was painful because it came at a time when they boys wanted to rectify their mistakes from the previous derby last year but unfortunately another mistake haunted them," Moloi said.

It doesn't get any easier for Pirates who will travel to the Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night as they take on Swallows FC in another Soweto Derby, the derby that has been considered as the 'Original Soweto Derby' and Moloi couldn't agree more stating that Pirates cannot afford to lose another Soweto Derby.

"This is the big one, it is not called the original Soweto Derby for no reason and the Pirates players need to understand that and bring their A game to the match,"

The match on Friday between the two Soweto teams has a huge significance in how things are shaping up in the DSTV Premiership table.

Swallows head into the encounter at the back of a 2-1 victory against Chippa United last weekend that saw them leapfrog Maritzburg United to go 14th on the log with 24 points and create some breathing space between them and United alongside Marumo Gallants.

Having been knocked out of the Nedbank Cup in the last 32, Swallows only have one goal in mind and that is to retain their DSTV Premiership status by not being relegated and the fight continues against Pirates on Friday.

Ernst Midderndorp's side will look to Kagiso Malinga again alongside Tawanda Macheke to potentially get the much needed goals for the Dube Birds in a bid to get the maximum points against a wounded Pirates side.

Next up for Swallows after the Soweto Derby is Golden Arrows before they travel to KZN for a date with Amazulu and then they will welcome defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Dobsonville Stadium on the 9th of April.

Meanwhile Pirates will look to do the league double over Maswaiswai having defeated them before 1-0 in the reverse fixture last year at the Orlando Stadium.

Pirates will receive the major boost of coach Jose Riviero who was serving his 2 match suspension against Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs respectively, however they will be without captain Innocent Maela who received a red card against Amakhosi.

"It is good that the coach is back even though they will be missing their captain but a team like Pirates has players that can step up and cover for a player that is not available," said Moloi.

Pirates who are now 5 points adrift of the second place spot on the log have 9 more games to play and Moloi believes if they continue to drop points they might forfeit that CAF Champions League spot.

"Reality is the team cannot continue to drop points and expect to play in continental football next season unless it's not in the plans of the team to compete in Africa next season because I also haven't heard the coach or players talk about CAF aspirations for next season," Moloi alluded.

"So if they really want to play in Africa then it starts on Friday by winning the derby against Swallows although it is not going to be easy but they can achieve the victory,"

After the derby with Swallows, Pirates will next face Venda Football Academy in the Nedbank Cup last 16 before welcoming SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium on the 18th of March.

Kick-off on Friday at the Dobsonville Stadium is expected to be at 19:30.
