Mmodi is one of the seven new Amakhosi signings and many of the Chiefs' faithful had expected him to start on Sunday against Chippa United.

Upon heading to Durban for the encounter that will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Amakhosi released a statement confirming Mmodi's absence from the traveling squad.

“The Kaizer Chiefs family are saddened to announce the passing on of Basetsana Lillian Mmodi (Pule Mmodi’s mother) after an illness, We send our heartfelt condolences at this sorrow time to Pule, his family and friends as Pule has been provided the necessary compassion and will not form part of the team on weekend," the statement read.

After the season opener against Chippa United, the Glamour Boys will face Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday the 9th of July 2023 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium before traveling to Cape Town to face Cape Town City in the quarter-final of the MTN 8 on Sunday the 13th of July 2023.
