Spar Proteas captain sets her sight on the podium finish

With only 15 days left before the 2023 Netball World Cup in South Africa commences, Spar Proteas captain Bongiwe Msomi has revealed that the Spar Proteas' ultimate goal is obtaining a podium finish.

The Spar Proteas have been grouped with Jamaica, Wales and Sri Lanka for the first round of matches and will firstly take on Wales on the 28th of July, followed by Sri Lanka on the 29th of July and Jamaica a day later.

Stepping onto a netball court for the first time as a teenager, the now 35-year-old could never have envisioned that she would one day lead her side to a first ever Netball World Cup on home soil.

As the team prepares for the showpiece, Msomi believes that one of the key aspects that will make the Spar Proteas stand-out above the rest in the World Cup is the experience they have.

“We are in a pretty tough pool because firstly Wales are a great side and our last test series against them was tough, although we won all three of our games, we also know that Jamaica have been playing solid netball recently, they finished second at the Commonwealth Games.

Well we haven't played Sri Lanka in a long time, but still we are not going to underestimate any team, we will tackle every match with professionalism and believe that our experience will take over the line," Msomi said.

Having taken over as captain for the first time in 2016, Msomi also believes she has grown in the role, especially since the last Netball World Cup in 2019, where the Spar Proteas finished in fourth place.

"I have learned to understand that I never have to do it all alone, or even have to feel like I'm alone or have to do all the work, I lead a beautiful team that is led by one of the best coaches in the world of netball.

That alone comes with a lot of clarity and learning, which helps me so much to be selfless and brave but also to understand my capabilities, be confident in myself and the people I lead with," Msomi added.

The Netball World Cup will run from the 28th of July 2023 till the 6th of August 2023 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa.
