Sundowns record yet another victory against Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the summit of the DStv Premiership after their 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

In a game of two halves, Sundowns dominated the first half as Lucas Ribeiro broke the deadlock after a horrific moment in defence from Kaizer Chiefs.

Reeve Frosler will surely hold his head up high as he came out on top for the better part of his duels with the speedy Thapelo Maseko, who started for Aubrey Modiba and was a constant threat down his flank in the first 45 minutes.

After the break Peter Shalulile had a brilliant chance to make it 2-0 after being set up by Ribeiro but he fluffed his chance from close range as Amakhosi grew in confidence.

Chiefs had their first notable attack of the match in the 55th minute when a cross by Ashley Du Preez was met by a flying header from Ranga Chivaviro but Mothobi Mvala deflected it out for a corner.

Shalulile had another great chance in the 66th minute after appearing free before Brandon Petersen, but the Chiefs goalkeeper denied the striker with a superb save, before Maseko missed the target on the rebound.

Maseko also found himself in a good position in the 75th minute, but Petersen came up with another great save, before denying Marcelo Allende on the rebound as well.

Chiefs made Sundowns rue those chances when Du Preez scored the equaliser in the 84th minute following a superb cross by substitute Tebogo Potsane.

However, Sundowns' Neo Maema had the last say in the encounter as he scored Sundowns' second goal and his first for the season to seal the three points for Rulani Mokwena's charges.

The two sides will now turn their attention to the MTN 8 quarter-finals as the Brazilians play against Moroka Swallows on Saturday while Amakhosi travel to Cape Town for a date with Cape Town City on Sunday.
