Sundowns simply brilliant against Royal AM

Mamelodi Sundowns were too perfect for Royal AM in Tuesday night's DSTV Premiership match as the defending champions thrashed the side from KZN 5-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns who came into the match at the back of another clinical performance over the past weekend defeating Egyptian giants Al Ahly 5-2 in group B of the CAF Champions League started their encounter on Tuesday the same way they concluded the encounter on Saturday afternoon.

A brilliant interplay between Neo Maema and Cassius Mailula in the 21st minute was the perfect combination to take Sundowns in the lead as Mailula netted his 8th goal of the season in the current campaign.

6 minutes later a moment of confusion took place when Royal AM defender Ricardo Nascimento scored an own goal after his goalkeeper Zakahle Xolani Ngcobo was off his line to give Sundowns the 2-0 lead.

With Royal AM nowhere to be found in the first half, Peter Shalulile completed the drubbing with a superb strike after a neatly executed assist from Khuliso Mudau in the 42nd minute to take make sure Sundowns head into halftime leading 3-0.

Shalulile was at it again just after halftime when he scored his second goal of the match and Sundowns' fourth after capitalising from some poor defending from the Royal AM defenders in the box.

The Namibian international is now the PSL's outright top scorer after taking his tally to 11 goals for this term with seven matches left in the campaign.

Just as it seemed like Sundowns were about to crush John Maduka's men, Lantshene Phalane pulled one back for Royal AM in the 68th minute with a thunderous shot from outside the penalty box.

Mothobi Mvala then concluded the riot in the 74th minute, from an Aubrey Modiba corner, Mvala headed the ball into the back of net much to the delight of his head coach Rhulani Mokwena.

The victory means that the Brazilians have now opened a 20-point lead at the top of the league standings, but second-placed SuperSport United have a game in hand.

Sundowns will next take on Al Hilal Omdurman in the CAF Champions League Group B match in Sudan on Saturday afternoon.
